Choosing the right customers

Why the Right Customers Matter as Much as the Right People

You often hear the advice: surround yourself with positive, inspiring people.

It’s good advice. The people you spend time with shape your thinking, your energy, and ultimately your outcomes.

But here’s something we don’t talk about enough in business:

Your customers shape your experience just as much as your colleagues, mentors, or friends do.

The Pressure to Say Yes

Running a business isn’t easy.

There’s always the pipeline to think about. Deals to close. Targets to hit. Opportunities that might not come around again.

Because of that pressure, it can feel like you simply can’t afford to turn work away.

Many founders and consultants fall into the same trap early on: saying yes to almost every opportunity that comes their way.

But over time, you realise something important.

The wrong customers can be just as damaging to your business as the wrong colleagues, friends, or even family.

They drain time.
They create friction.
They slow momentum.

And perhaps most importantly, they pull your focus away from the work you do best.

The Power of Like-Minded Clients

On the other hand, when you find customers who genuinely align with how you work, everything changes.

These are the clients who:

  • Believe in the same standards you do
  • Value expertise rather than shortcuts
  • Want to build something better, not just faster

When that alignment exists, the difference is huge.

Projects move quicker.
Communication becomes easier.
The results are stronger.

And the energy becomes contagious.

Instead of feeling like you’re constantly pushing uphill, it feels like you’re building momentum together.

A Few Brilliant Weeks

Over the past few weeks, Thrive Talent Solutions has been incredibly fortunate to work with three A⭐ clients.

They’ve pushed for great outcomes, challenged thinking in the right ways, and brought the kind of enthusiasm that makes you want to go further and faster.

They’ll know who they are (no need to tag!), but I’m incredibly grateful for the partnership.

These are the kinds of collaborations that remind you why you started your business in the first place.

Partnership Over Transactions

For growing businesses, recruitment often becomes a transactional exercise.

A role opens.
A CV arrives.
A hire is made.

But the best results rarely come from transactions.

They come from partnerships.

Taking the time to understand a company’s culture, ambitions, and direction of travel means the talent you bring in doesn’t just fill a gap, it strengthens the business for the long term.

Let’s Talk

If you’re a growing business looking for more than just a service provider, and you want a partner who takes the time to understand your culture, your needs, and where you’re heading…

…and then translates that into the talent you hire…

let’s talk.

And if you’d like to hear directly from some of the clients I’ve recently worked with about the impact we’ve created together, I’d be more than happy to connect you.
